Kansas City Royals pitching coach Brian Sweeney recently did a virtual Q&A with members of Green Sox Youth Baseball. Sweeney, who played several sports in high school, was asked if playing multiple sports can help a young baseball player.
Coach Sweeney explained that, by engaging in different athletic experiences, players can learn how to move their bodies in new ways, adapt to different game situations, and build resilience.
Coach Sweeney also noted that the movement patterns he practiced on the football field enhanced his performance on the baseball diamond. This cross-training not only improved his quickness and toughness but also gave his body essential recovery time between seasons. With the rising number of injuries among young baseball players, particularly pitchers, Coach Sweeney argued that this break is crucial for their physical health.
